Dr. Kathy Jenkins

Principal Dr. Kathy Jenkins has been an educator for 15 years. She began her career in Chicago Public Schools in 1999 serving as a primary teacher, curriculum coordinator, leadership intern, assistant principal, and building principal. She recently completed a superintendent internship in District 365 (Romeoville/Bolingbrook) before arriving in Freeport.
Dr. Jenkins believes that every child can succeed, given the right environment. Hence, Carl Sandburg Middle School will have a happy and caring environment for children, where they are nurtured by specially identified experienced, competent, dedicated and caring teachers.
During her undergraduate coursework at DePaul University, Dr. Jenkins worked full-time in the Financial Accounts department helping students to find ways of paying for their tuition. While earning dual graduate degrees (Teaching and Learning/Early Childhood), Dr. Jenkins served as a Child Development Lecturer for City Colleges of Chicago and volunteered as a literacy tutor. In 2005, she continued her studies in the DePaul Doctoral Ed. Leadership program and graduated with her degree in June 2013.
In her role as Principal, she has expertise in curriculum design, educational technology, assessment and evaluation, professional development for teachers, pedagogies based on the theory of Multiple Intelligences, learning styles, and school administration related skills. Dr. Jenkins is a member of the prominent Illinois Principal Association and the DePaul University Volunteer Literacy Program.
